PSC in Albany Today and Tomorrow
PSC president Barbara Bowen is in Albany today, joining the SUNY union president and NYSUT officers in meetings with the leaders of the State Senate and Assembly on the public higher education budget.  Together, they are calling on the legislature to reject the governor’s proposal for sweeping cuts and increased privatization of CUNY and SUNY.  Tomorrow, two dozen more PSC members will participate tomorrow in a day of public higher education advocacy, an effort that unites SUNY faculty and staff from every region of the state with CUNY faculty and staff in support of restoration of funds to public higher education.

One-Day Lobbying Blitz with Students in Albany Next Tuesday, 3/9
The PSC and NYPIRG (New York State Public Interested Research Group) have teamed up to amplify our “rational investment”” message in Albany on Tuesday, 3/9. This lobbying day is also co-sponsored by the CUNY University Student Senate and 6 campus student government associations. Buses from all five boroughs, mostly leaving from CUNY campuses, with students, faculty and staff will head to Albany for a one-day lobbying blitz. Join us! Tell your students (here is a flyer). They – and you – can sign up by calling Amanda Magalhaes in the PSC office, 212-354-1252 or clicking here.  Sign up soon! The deadline is Friday, 3/5.
If you can’t make it next Tuesday, you can lobby with the PSC and NYSUT next week, 3/16 and 3/17. Contact Amanda Magalhaes in the PSC office, 212-354-1252, to sign up
The PSC has also endorsed the March 4 rally in Defense of Public Education, part of a national day of protest, which will occur in New York City at 4 pm, at Gov. Paterson’s Manhattan office, at 4:00 at Third Avenue and 41st Street, followed by a march to the MTA hearings at the Fashion Institute of Technology (not MTA headquarters as previously planned) at Seventh Avenue and 27th Street. PSC president Barbara Bowen will be among the speakers. Other rallies and events supporting the day in Defense of Public Education will also occur on some CUNY and SUNY campuses.  More information is available here.

NYSUT Runs Ads Against State Budget Cuts
NYSUT, with the PSC and UUP, is running TV advertisements warning against cutting CUNY and SUNY. See it here.

PSC to Testify at the City Council Again Next Week
On Friday, PSC leaders will testify against Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed cuts of $24.9 million to CUNY’s community college budget at a hearing of the Higher Education Committee. The hearing is Friday, 3/5, at 250 Broadway, 14th Floor. It starts at noon, and public comment will begin at 1:30 pm. If you’d like to testify or just come to listen, contact Kate Pfordresher in the PSC office, 212-354-1252.
Last week, CUNY administration and PSC President Barbara Bowen and Secretary Arthurine DeSola, h other PSC leaders, briefed the City Council on diversity among instructional staff at CUNY at a hearing of the Higher Education Committee, now headed by former City College student activist Ydanis Rodriguez. The hearing came out of a story in the September Clarion].
General Meetings about Bargaining the Next Contract Underway
PSC President Barbara Bowen and other officers will visit every campus this semester to begin a union-wide conversation about bargaining the next contract with CUNY. The current contract expires in October of this year. Come to the meeting on your campus to discuss your priorities for the next contract and how we can generate the power we need. Contact your chapter chair or PSC Organizing Director Rob Murray for more information, and check the PSC website’s calendar to see when your campus meeting is posted. HEOs and CLTs are invited to the general meetings on their campuses as well as their cross-campus chapter meetings.

Some HEOs Due Letter of Reappointment Today
If you are a HEO who has worked at CUNY for three or more years but fewer than eight years, your letter of reappointment is due on Monday, 3/1. If you do not receive a letter, or if you receive a letter of non-reappointment, immediately call a grievance counselor in the PSC office, 212-354-1252. The deadline for filing a grievance for these non-reappointments is April 12, 2010.

Sign the Letter Opposing Cuts to CUNY
The governor has proposed $84.4 million in cuts to CUNY’s 11 senior colleges (including $20.8 million in cuts to workforce costs) and a cut of $285 per full-time-equivalent student from CUNY’s six community colleges (an 11% drop). Mayor Bloomberg also announced last week he is seeking millions from community colleges, which the PSC quickly denounced.
Community and senior colleges are facing record enrollments – and the proposed cuts come after nearly $100 million in cuts last year and two decades of underfunding.
Add your opposition to the cuts: sign this letter to the call for a “rational public investment” in public higher education. The budget page on the PSC website features regular news, information, and ways to get involved to fight for CUNY. You can also lobby with the union in Albany or here in the City; call Amanda Magalhaes in the PSC office 212-354-1252.

Write to Clarion about Budget Cuts
CUNY’s funding is down, while enrollment is shooting up.  As these two factors collide, what's the effect on your campus?  Clarion wants to know – email your thoughts in today.
