Paid Parental Leave Retroactive Deadline This Wednesday
Full-time CUNY employees represented by the PSC, who became parents of a newborn or newly adopted child (under the age of five) between 7/17/08 and 3/20/09 and had at least one year of full-time service at the time of birth or adoption are eligible for a retroactive Paid Parental Leave benefit. You must apply for the retroactive benefit by Wednesday, 5/20. The PSC website has instructions and the retroactive benefit application form, plus the letter of agreement on Paid Parental Leave. Questions? Call or email Moriah Berger in the PSC office, 212-354-1252. (Clarissa Weiss is on vacation until the end of the month.)
Tell City Council to Reverse Community College Budget Cuts
PSC President Barbara Bowen and First Vice President Steve London testified before a joint hearing of City Council’s Higher Education and Finance Committee’s on May 15. Their message was that CUNY is the Path to New York’s Future – and they urged committee members to reject the CUNY Board of Trustees’ proposed $350 annual tuition increase for community college students, rescind Mayor Bloomberg’s $46.5 million in cuts to CUNY community colleges, reinstate funds for City Council-sponsored programs such as Black Male Empowerment Initiative; and match $160 million in capital funds provided by New York State.
“There is a better way to balance the City’s budget, even in these hard times. The PSC supports progressive income taxes and investment in vital public services,” said Barbara Bowen. You can still send a message to your City Council Member by going to the PSC website and sending a letter right this moment. Don’t wait. Don’t procrastinate. Agitate! .
Contract Now for EOC’s—Sign the Petition
Nine months after a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between PSC and CUNY, there is still no agreement on the terms in the Supplement covering employees at the Educational Opportunity Centers (EOCs) in titles represented by the PSC. The union is calling for parity in wage increases and other applicable benefit improvements for employees in EOC titles with equivalent CUNY titles.
EOC’s have initiated plans for a University-wide petition drive in support of their campaign.
“We want our colleagues in the rest of PSC to know we’re angry, and we will be calling on them to support our efforts to settle this agreement and see our membes paid quickly,” said Brooklyn EOC Chapter Chair Amy Nicholas.
Memorial for Jane Young This Wednesday at BMCC
Dr. Jane Young’s many friends and colleagues will come together May 20 from 2-4 p.m. to celebrate her life. The gathering will be held at the BMCC Faculty Cafeteria on the third floor. Dr. Young, who was PSC chapter chair at BMCC from 2001 to 2008, died on April 10 after a valiant battle with mesothelioma. She had been a member of the English Department at BMCC for 43 years, and she led the faculty as they coped with the loss of six students and the destruction of a classroom building, Fiterman Hall, in the attack on September 11. CUNY colleagues are welcome to attend.
